HINTS & TIPS FOR USING A RENTAL TRAILER FROM U-HAUL
U-haul's requirements for towing include:
1. 2" hitch ball
2. 5000 Lb minimum tow vehicle capacity - If your vehicle is questionable, just pick it up and return it with a friend's truck
3. According to the Uhaul website, the trailer type you ask for is referred to as a "Toy Hauler"
4. If asked what type of vehicle you are towing, some may accept "Shelby Cobra". But if they don't know what that is, tell them it's for a "Mazda Miata".
Loading Tips:
1. Elevate the front of the trailer by jacking up under the trailer tongue while STILL attached to your tow vehicle to decrease the ramp angle, ease loading and provide more clearance as you load.
2. If you need more clearance, find some blocks of wood to put under the ends of the ramps on the ground to lessen the angle between ramps and trailer floor.
3. A 2" x 6" board can also be used to extend the ramps and lessen the angles for clearance
Car Covers and Cobra Tips:
1. Do not cover the car on an open trailer due to the damage a loose cover will do to the paint due to flapping in the wind
2. Do not attach tonneau cover on a Cobra for the same reasons. If you decide to use the tonneau due to weather, or any other reason, use multiple layers of painters tape where the tonneau comes into contact with the paintwork and tape the sides of the material down as well. Check frequently and replace as needed to prevent permanent damage.
3. Consider putting up the full Cobra soft top with windows in for the best weather solution. Keep in mind the older single rear window soft tops should not be driven past 60-65 mph. The newer style 3 window soft top can be towed up to 70-80 mph safely.
HINTS & TIPS FOR USING A RENTAL BOX TRUCK FROM U-HAUL
Precaution: U-haul does not recommend this:
1. Box trucks can be less expensive than a truck and trailer rental, especially if used one-way long distances in an emergency.
2. This technique is especially helpful when driving your car without a trailer and needing an inexpensive way to get back home.
3. Rent a box truck with at least a 16' length box platform. Sometimes longer box trucks are cheaper than shorter ones due to demand.
4. Hire a flat bed tow operator which are everywhere. Drive your car up onto his flat bed. back up to the box truck and roll your car in.
5. Do not expect hooks in the floor, and screw in 4x4's to the floor as roll stops, and screw in D-ring or Eye hooks into the floor.
6. Use common ratchet straps to lash the car to the floor. Reverse the process to unload the car.
